Now you can inhale your coffee, literally [American innovation]

Have you ever thought, man, the problem with coffee is there is no way to inhale it.
No? Me neither.
But this being America, someone has finally come up with a solution to the ‘uninhaleability of coffee’ problem.
It is a disposable, lipstick-sized contraption called “Le Wiff” from which you can inhale either chocolate or coffee flavoring. Invented [...]

Three ways hamburgers are like America [guest post]

Hamburgers are perhaps the most American of foods.  They combine cheap meat with a bun made from subsidized grain and can often be bought for very little money. Thanks to the good folks at McDonald’s, they can be had pretty much anywhere you’d want to go in the world too.
Now being an American, I like [...]

#26. Green Beer

Now that you’re all sobered up, let’s talk about Green Beer.
I’m not sure who first invented Green Beer (Budweiser + food dye), but it’s probably safe to assume he wasn’t Irish—or even Irish-American. And that is fine and dandy, because St. Patrick’s Day isn’t about Ireland or Irishness anymore. It is an American Holiday to [...]

Now they want a “Pizza Tax”

First it was soda taxes. Then it was salt bans. Now the food police want to tax our pizza.
Consumerist has the story:
While the current Soda Tax trend looks doomed to fail in New York state and Philadelphia, researchers are already making a suggestion for the target of the next sin tax — pizza.
A team of doctors [...]

New York soda tax dead… for now [soda tax]

You can stop stockpiling Coke— at least for the time being.
The AP reports that Governor Patterson’s soda tax appears to be a non starter in the Senate.
A proposed new tax on sugary drinks appears unlikely to pass the state Senate, despite passionate campaigning by New York Gov. David Paterson and his health commissioner.
Supporters have pushed [...]

Why our meat is so cheap [chart]

If there is one thing that McDonald’s taught us, it is that Prosperity doesn’t taste like Tofu—it tastes like meat.
Perhaps this is why the most prosperous nation in the world spends so much money subsidizing the cost of meat. What, after all, is the good of all our riches if every man, woman and child [...]

That myth about how Coke dehydrates you

You know how whenever you’re thirsty and reach for an ice cold refreshing soft drink someone invariably tells you that soda will dehydrate you or only make you thirstier? Yeah, well it turns out that is total BS.
From the New York Times:
It was long thought that caffeinated beverages were diuretics, but studies reviewed last year [...]

Coming to a store near you: Chocolate Peeps [American Innovation]

You know Peeps: Those delicious, colorful, sugar-coated marshmallow treats that, like a fine wine, manage to taste better with age? Well now they are available in a chocolate version as well.
We’ll go ahead and call it an Easter Miracle.
For more info on the history of Peeps and Just Born Inc., the company that makes them, [...]

Is your thirst big enough?

Reader Dan sent in this amazing picture of a Pizza Hut in Munich.
There is a bit of a reflection, but the poster is advertizing Pizza Hut’s new Free Refills promotion.  The text reads “Free Refill – ist dein Durst gross genug?” Translation: “Free Refill – is your thirst big enough?”
A few things struck me about [...]

New Yorkers oppose soda tax, prohibition [poll]

Earlier this week I wrote about Governor Patterson’s effort to overturn some of New York’s absurd blue laws and allow wine sales in grocery stores.
Unsurprisingly, the proposal seems popular. According to a new poll out by Siena College, 58 percent of New Yorker’s support the plan. 38 percent of respondents opposed the idea.
The poll also [...]
