About

So you clicked on the About Page huh? What’s the matter? You weren’t satisfied with the About Box to the right?

Well, that is OK.

If you’re looking for the full story behind Free Refills & Why I Love America, then you have come to the right place.

It started with conversation with a few Germans.

In the summer of 2006, I was working on a political campaign in Michigan. It just so happens that there was three or four German students over for the summer who were volunteering on the same campaign.

It was their first time in America and they loved it. Big cars, bigger stores and air conditioning everywhere. But after about a week, they began to ask some questions. How could it be, for instance, that a country so wealthy could have no universal healthcare? Why did American’s have to pay to go to college? Was it possible that Detroit, one of the biggest metro-areas in the county, really had no meaningful mass transit?

Initially I was dumbfounded. I didn’t know how to respond. After all, I had often wondered the same things.

But then it hit me. Europeans might have fancy schmancy things like free, universal health care, but there are a whole lot of good things they don’t have that we do, like free refills on soda.

I immediately started making a mental list of all of the little things that make America great. I thought it might make a good blog topic, but in the true American fashion I kept putting it off—for three years.

Finally, in March 2009, I bit the bullet and set up this blog.

I hope you enjoy it.
