Maryland patriots rally to defeat speed camera bill

Patriots in the Maryland State Senate rallied to defeat by a single vote a bill that would have allowed authorities to deploy speed cameras across the state, the Washington Post reported.

The Governor and members of the Maryland State House have been pushing a radical, pro-speed camera agenda for some time. But proposals to expand the use of surveillance cameras to ticket speeding motorists have met with stiff resistance in the State Senate.

The speed camera bill that was defeated tonight would have allowed for expanded use of speed cameras in school and construction zones across the state.

But patriots in the Senate stood firm in defense of liberty. The Washington Post has the details:

…some senators said they were concerned the cameras would be used largely to raise revenue for local governments. And they said they would represent an unprecedented intrusion into citizens’ private lives. One senator read aloud from George Orwell’s novel “1984.”

The deciding vote against the measure was cast by Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. (D)

Speed cameras were invented by the Dutch, and are in wide use across the United Kingdom and other European counties.
